"THE GLEANER"
W. D. T. ATKINSON, M.A., Principal
Foreward
In looking over the forewords of other principals in the var- ious school magazines, we find that approximately sixty-two per cent say "Another year has rolled by", about twelve percent. say, "'This is my message for the students of this school for this year;" and the remaining twenty-six per cent, perhaps more wisely say nothing at all but merely exhibit their photographs in their test olothes which in itself should be sufficient inspira- tion. Not feeling so a.J::out our own photograph, we have to find :J hrief messag.e for the .students of this school, now that, as has
truly l::een said, another year has rolled by.
ln the short space at our disposal, we should like to develop a thought or two from the theme of our school motto, "Sapere Aude"-"Dare to be wise." This, with the owl on our crest, was chosen long ago by an older, more earnest generation, who had to make greater sacrifices and work harder for what it got in the way of education. But the command carried in the old motto is as urgently needed now as ever; for it still takes courage to be wise, to get an education amidst all the distractions of mod- ern life. Students today require as much courage as did those who selected our motto and crest; it is only that they face ditf.. erent dangers.
Our hope is that the students of the Collingwood Collegiate Institute will possess that courage which will enable them to per- severe to the end, and that each of them will carry·it with him as he goes forth to face the battle of life.
