'I\his new sport was limited last fall, but I trust another season will bring improvements and a greater in- terest from forms other than the nines and tens. So until next fall, and a new soccer season, I bid you odieu, and to all a very pleasant summer va- cation.
SCHOOL FIELD DAY By Bob Wright
A new precedent was set in this year's field day when Mr. Gooday made it compulsory for every boy to enter ?t least two track and one field events. This new system proved very success- ful, and our first field day in several yPars was run off in perfect weather, with no interruptions. At the end of the second period of September 19th, the whole school went over to the Ex- hibition Park, and track schedules were ran off until late afternoon.
Barney Walmsley rolled up 33 points to win the Junior title by five points over Bob lvey, as he outdistan- c~d the field in all the running events. He set up aJunior 100 yds. record by stepping the distance in 11 seconds flat.
The Intermediate title went to P11nl Pursianinen who just managed to edge out "Elk" Miller by two points after a rluel which !.'.lsted right to the la;1t. event. "Percv" trailed by quite "~- bit in the sprint events, but he hrec7erl th't'ongh to the championship when the field events came up, and won the hop, step and jump, ·hil!'h jump, p0le vault. and placed second in the running broad jump. In the track
events, Jack Miller won the 100, 220 and 440 yard dashes. Charlie Hudson won the Intermediate half mile, and placed second in the 220, and 440. Graham Crosbie won the shot put, with Shldon Redpath and Alec McCombie ~Pcond and third. Harold Whitehead, Bo.b Fawc·tt, a"'d Bill Styler also col- lected their share of points.
W ally Cook set up new records in all the sprinting events in the Sen- ior group. He not only made a clean sweep of all the events but added to his laurels by sailing twenty feet to win the running broad jump and then placed second in the shot put. He ran the 100 yds. in 10 seconds flat, the 220 in 22 seconds and the 440 in 53 4/5 seconds. Although not a jumper by choice his leap of 20 feet is a new Collingwood record. John Sommer- ville and Bob Wright tied for second place, with 17 points apiece. John won first in the shot put, and second in the 220, and 440. "Meatball" com- piled his points with seconds in the running broad and high jumps and the 1 mile race, and third in the hop, step and jump. Paul Van Nest ran a close fourth with 16 points, with a first in the hop, step and jump, seconds in the 100 and 220, and third in the running broad .iump. Bob Fryer was best in the high jumps. Ovas Wagg got thirds ·i11 the 220, and 880 dashes, and in the shot put. Bill Allan and George Law- rence also placed in the Senior events.
There were a few minor casualties of the day-George Foster ripped the "derriere" out of his pants when Joe Noonan's motorcycle dragged him along by one foot-Fred Rentner had double r:harlie horses for two weeks (I don't know why though, he didn't exert him- self). Several of the hard working athletes picked up bad sunburns from lyin~ on the grass all day.
