First Prize - Rosemary Ruppert
DARK MOMENT
For a shameful moment hatred fills our mind,
And our h eant is overwhelmed with thoughts unkind.
Remember . .. this will not harm the one you waste your pas- sion on,
But ever in your heart will show as wrong.
So ha,bour not an ugly thought unkind
For Y'OU are being only blind. Second Prize-Craig Cook
MORNING
When morning tbrings anrother d,ay
lind darkened shadows fly away, The birds all rouse us wilth a
song
First Prize-Alice Mcivor
FROST ETCHINGS
The pane is etched with wond- rous tracery;
Curve interlaced witth curve and line with line,
Like subtle measures of StWeet harmony
Transformed to shapes of beauty crysta.IUne.
Slim, graceful vines and tendrils of such sort
As never •gr·ew save in some fairy world
Wind up from roots of misted silver wrought
Through ttulip flowers and lilies half unfurled.
Shag firs amd hemlocks blend with plumy palms,
Spiked cacti spring from feath- ery ferns and weeds,
And sea blooms such as rock in southern oalms
Ming-le their foamv fronds with sedge and reeds.
A:nd therP. are flights of birds with iris wings
And cheer us through the whole d:av long.
The p.ond lies verv still and fair In the quiet crisp morning .air, The bees they buzz around the
flowers
Singing through the morning
hours.
The dew is sparkling on the grass
It makes it look like polished glass,
The trees look •t•all and very for- lorn
In the bright sunshine of the morn.
The rays of the sun are shining bright
Brin.!;ing to earth a radiant light,
The meadows and fields are sparkling whitle
After the darkness of the night. INTERMEDIATE POETRY COMPETITION

That shed in mid-air many a •brilliant plume,
And scintiUaltin:~; s h o ,a I s of .swimming things
That seem to float in clear green ocean gloOIIl.
And there are diamond crested diadems,
And o11bs of pearl and sceptres o f p a l •e g o l d ,
Stored u:p in crystal grottoes, lit with gems
And rpaved with emeralds of 'Price untold.
And marvelLous architecture of l i l l O n a m •e ,
Facades •and shafts of lovliest form and hue,
Keen pinnacles and turrets tip- ped with flame,
And fretted domes of purest sapphire blue.
All 1hese the genii of the Frost last night
Wrought through the still cold hours by •Charm amd rune; And now. like dreams dispelled
before the light,
They float aWlav in va.pour on
the noon.
