      BYNG CONTINUATION SCHOOL, STAYNER
A new Continuation Sohool was erected in Stayner in 1922 at a total oost ot $80,000,00, The old sohool, whioh had been situated at the corn- er where the basketball oourt now stands, was torn down to make room tor the new building, At the opening ot the new sohool in September, 1923, the name ot Byng was ohosen in honour ot Lord Byng ot Vimy,Governor-General ot Canada at that time.
The board of trustees in office at the time of the completion of Byng School included Messrs. Robert Allan, Ben Wheeler, A.H.Campbell (the former owner of Besse's Creamery), Jack Lamont, Otto Weatherup and Jim Beattie,then owner of "The Stayner Sun". All are deceased except Mr. Allen and Mr, Wea- therup.
Former principals of Stayner Continuation .School include Messrs. Murdy, McLean, Hammill, Cohoe, and Wright. ~. G. Lemon is the present principal. The number of pupils taking high school subjects at Stayner has varied. !rom 65-90 during these past years.
In January, I95I, when the Collingwood District High School area was formed, Stayner Continuation School ceased to exist - becoming instead Stay- ner High School - and part ot the area.
The history of Stayner Continuation School will reach its definite con- clusion in January, I954, when all the high school pupils !rom Stayner begin attending the new area school in Collingwood upon its completion. Stayner Publio School will then take over the whole ot the building.
Throughout the years Stayner Continuation School has filled an impor- tant place in the life ot the town. Its influence and accomplishments, des- pite limitations ot space and scope, will continue to be telt tar into the future. The history of this school has been unpretentious but satisfactory, and has Justified the hopes of the original small group ot men who were re- sponsible for its coming into existence.
