Girls' Athletic Association
DIANE BUTTERS, President d the Girls' Athletic Association.
ELAINE CAIRNS, the V ice-president, took charge of the G.A . A. while Diane was getting a sun-tan in Florida.
Although the school term has not yet expired, the Girls' Athletic Association is very pleased with the way in which the girls have participated in sports this year. After much practice and excellent coaching by Mrs. Gough and Mrs. Black, the girls of the Collingwood Collegiate were victorious in bringing home the Thompson Cup. l·t took real determination and skill in winning this cup, but the team was able to show they possessed both of these excellent qualities.
During the volleyball season both Junior and Senior Cossa teams practiced hard for many hours. They were well coached by Mrs. Gough. The tournament took place in November at the Barrie North Collegiate. We were pleased to see our Junior team gain second place and the Senior team tied for fourth position. There were a number of good Junior players this year who, we hope, with a little more practice, will produce a first next year.
Our Junior basketball team went all the way to victory, in winning the Central Georgian BayChampionship. The girls consistently played well, winning all their games with the exception of Newmarket, to whom they lost by seven narrow points in a home-and-home series in the COSSA championship. Many excellent players were developed, namely Carolyn Christensen, Jennifer Abernethy, Gloria Culbert, converted guard to forward-- Cathy Mitchell, and a number of rookies, who will form the backbone of next year's team.
I want to congratulate all the girls who have taken part in the G.A.A. this year and to encourage those of you who have not, to make a specie I point of trying out for at least one of the COSSA teams next year.
