LOST LOVE
Here my love lies
in the cold, cold ground.
Here I took my heart
and buried it
one cold December morning; 'neath a blanket of white
I laid it -
and with it,
all the memories of days past.
Every Sunday
I visit my love
who lies beneath the cold, cold ground, and every Sunday I take my hat and coat and a flower from the vase
which stands on the mantle,
and I walk
along the same streets,
among the same graves,
till I reach my love.
I pick up the dead flower
left from Sunday•s visit,
and put the fresh one in its place;
I whisper the same words,
and utter the same sighs.
A path has been worn
from my house to where my love lies, - since the day when I took my heart,
and buried it
one cold December morning.

MYSTERY MAKERS
Junior Third
They are a society, all of their own: Free to wonder, pace and roam.
They are a society, no more of their kind: Free of the world; their own kind of mind.
They are a society, inco-ordinate to us:
Their dress it is fuimy; it caused quite a fuss.
They are a society, so named the hippy:
Their enjoyment is obscure. Cool it dad, yippy!

THE "LOST AND FOUND" OF WAR
Honourable Mention
Pray, what will you take to war? Allegiance,
Of a latter place behind your thoughts, But there all the same.
Pray, what did you leave behind?
A sweetheart perhaps, dressed in robes of snow, awaiting your return. Or a sister
Or mother
Standing at the window of the rustic house no longer a home.
Pray, what will you see when you get there?
Men huddling together,
Talking of home that they might not forget and live in war. More r a gged souls dressed in mud of dust and blood.
Pray, what do you wait for?
A sign, a signal
The battle's won by bewildered victors of the forgotten cause. Or a bullet tearing at your body
Sickened by the plague of war.
Pray, what is it all to gain?
Stature in the monarchy of power
And freedom to cause more pain and distress for the later ages. Freedom to pave the course of unrest for the future generations to their own satisfaction.
Pray, what awaits you on return? After the battle on the plains, The battle at home,
To resume the living of
Peace and tranquility.
