Sum1rner Of '72 The Calgary Stampede
The Collingwood Concert Band, under the direction of bandmaster Greg Arnason, played an impressive role in the 1972 Calgary Stampede Entertainment Go-Round.
The band was given no less than 26 assignments during the 10-day visit to the Stampede City. They were chosen to provide half-time entertainment at the football game between the Calgary Stampeders and the Edmonton Eskimos, and appeared in the Youth Parade and the Stampede Parade to an audience of over 350,000. They also made three Grandstand performances before capacity crowds, gave concerts by invitation at two Hospitals and played four times at the Stampede Art Centre and Flare Square.
Mr Arnason and his boys and girls in the band received highest praise from Stampede officials for their musical tal- ent, versatility, smart, clean-cut appearance, ready cooperation and deportment.
During brief time off periods, the band were the guests of Heritage Park, Happy Valley, Calgary Zoo, swimming pools, Calgary's 626 foot high Tower and the Television Station to see themselves in a re-run of the Stampede Parade.
The Band made an outstanding accomplishment for Collingwood publicity in that they were exposed to countless thousands during their tour in Calgary .
Locomotive 5934 was the last of the mountain-type engines to operate out of Calgary and is preserved at Calgary's Hospitality Centre.
