French Immersion Trip to St Donat
A small group of senior students have just returned from a five-
day French Immersion excursion to St. Donat, about an hour's drive north of Montreal in the Laurention Provincial Park.
The program includes three hours o f instruction and local history, geography and culture, during which the students con- ducted tape-recorded, on-the-street interviews with Francophone local inhabitants. Our students had the courage to go into the local school to question teachers and students. The other -outside ac- tivity- wilderness survival. Another three hour session, this time on types of animals, edible or inedible, things to carry for survival in the bush, how to orient a map and use a compass. The students also learned how to make a branch bivouac and a snow shelter after leading each other by compass through the bush to a ren- dezvous.
Evening activities included a carnival, - snow shoeing, log carrying, multiple purpose ski, and toboggan races - a folk lore evening, and an amateur talent contest. All activities were in French and communication in French among the students and between the students and the public was rewarded by the award of tickets for a nightly draw. Everyone managed to get some downhill or cross-country skiing in and Bonnie Ward and Ted McLeod (1st & 3rd beginners) and Jennifer Cation (2nd advance) proved C.C.1.'s prowess in the Saturday morning race. It takes something like this to bring an awareness that what we do in class has relevance to the world outside.
