First there was "Crocodile Dundee", then there was Mr. Monroe Doran. For the past year, CCI has been graced with the presence of Mr. Doran, an exchange teacher from downunder New Zealand. After spending these 12 months with "Us Canucks, eh" , he was able to make an interesting comparison of the school system in his homeland to how things operate at Collingwood Collegiate. Whether our system be better or worse, it certainly is different.'
In New Zealand, they do not have co-ed schools as guys and gals are not allowed to be together. This way, of course, is based on the British system. They have such punishments as the allowance of teachers to hit students as well as after-school detentions. Occassionally a teacher will have to "step" on a student's toes.
There are no hallways in the schools and, as a result, students have to carry all of their books. When they change classes, they have to go outside. Students must wear a uniform. Guys are expected to wear shorts with knee socks and gals must be attired in skirts. Male teachers are re- quired to wear shirt and tie each day .
Students don't have a lot of choice of courses to take and only two levels are offered. Like CCI, however, it takes 5 years to complete high school.
Options like Co-op and R and W are unheard of in the New Zealand system. On the otherhand , Mr . Doran's school offers teams that are non-existant here - rugby, cricket, field hockey, rowing and water polo. These teams run all year long - the school year going from February to December. All students must attend an assembly once a week where they must sit and listen to the principal speak for 45 minutes. All students write standardized tests and no one fails grades. The school, furthermore, is able to offer a great many outdoor activities. It is common to go back- packing with your class for 5 to 7 days. This is easily done when you consider Mr. Doran's school has its' own moun- tain lodge!!!
At Christmas Mr. Doran returned to his homeland after an ex- citing and unique year in Canada. CCI wishes him well and sends him thanks for many warm, fond memories of our own "Crocodile Dundee"! Interview with assistance from Amanda Walker
