This year, C.C.L's A.L group carried on its tradition of active involvement in both the school and community. The goal of the organization is to increase public awareness of human rights violations and injustices worldwide, and pro- mote respect for every person. Various campaigns have been undertaken over the past few months geared toward achiev- ing these aims. The main goal of Amnesty is to come to the aid ofand show support for political prisoners who have been wrongly detained or tortured for excercising free thought and expressing their views. Through writing letters to the appropriate government officials, Amnesty puts pressure on the particular country to investigate the disappearance, and do something about it.
Aside from letter-writing in response to urgent action no- tices from Amnesty headquarters, C.C.I.'s group devoted its energies to two major campaigns. To further strengthen the twinning process with the Piedre Azul community in El Salvador which was initiated last year, a friendship cel- ebration assembly was held at the school in December. The presentation featured a concert by Nacascol, a band from San Salvador, currently on tour to bring attention to the difficult conditions the citizens in El Salvador face. The en- tire student body shared in this educational and entertain- ing experience.
The second major campaign in 1994 was the Women's Day project in March, which included an information booth with videos highlighting women's issues, daily announcements and newspaper articles. To support its ventures, the organ- ization held various fundraising events such as Monster Bingo, which was a smashing success! Amnesty would like to thank everyone who demonstrated their support to help make a difference. "It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness".
