THE CONDOM CONUNDRUM
In 1993 The Simcoe County Board of Education responded to Barrie Secondary School Student Council requests to install condom dispensers in schools by re- searching and discussing the issue. The board resolved that the installation of dispensers would be permitted should individual school communities wish. A consultative process was developed and applied across the county with all 14 schools participating. The participants in the process were the students, teach- ers and parents of students currently enrolled in a secondary school.
The process involved the established of the Steering committee consisting of two students, a parent, a teacher, a health professional and the principal. This group organized the information forum and the administration of a survey. Based upon the results of the survey, the Steering Committee recommended to the Board that condom dispensers should be installed at Collingwood Col- legiate in conjunction with an educational program.
