WHAT TYPES OF MUSIC DO C.C.I. TEACHERS
"PLAY TO THE MAX"? Jazz
Do all teachers really listen to classical music? Do they stick to their rock 'n' roll roots? Or, do they go wild and crazy with heavy metal? The Gleaner conducteda survey to find an an- swer. The winner turned out to be good old rock 'n' roll. Heavy metal, disco, and rap did not get very good responses.
The survey also asked staff members if they ever played a musical instrument. Quite a few teachers played the piano or guitar, but some instruments were a little more unusual. Did you know that Mrs. Musselman played the drums??? (She also played the guitar.) Ms. Greer says she was "one totally awesome .clarinet player." Mr. Brown played the tuba in the C.C.l. band. Mr. Nickel's chosen instrument is the blues harp, and Mr. B. Jones sings and plays the harmonica, percussion and guitar.
When asked what song brings back memories for her, Mrs. Grant said it was the C.C.!.'School Song. According to her, "it used to be sung and 'stamped to' with vigour, and people who I saw sing it as students are now pare, nts." ".Light My Fire" reminds Mr. Redding of when he saw the Doors per- form in London, England. He even served Jim Morrison in the bar where he worked! "Whiter Shade of Pale" brings happy memories to Mrs. Plater ... it was playing when she met her first love. The same song was also played as the pro- cessional on Mrs. Sharp's wedding day. Mr. Allard remem- bers "Runaway" by Dell Shannon being used as "cruising music" when he was a teenager.
Nobody knows what the greatest song of all time really is, but C.C.I. teachers shared tneir thoughts on the matter. Mr. J. Sneyd thinks it may be "Carnival of Venice'' because it is "a real challenge for trumpet players." Mr. Knox says "The Weight" by The Bandis a gr~at song because it "brings to- gether so·tnany musical genres and it made Bob Dylan's pink cottage hideaway famous." "Unchained Melody" is the great- est song ofall time according to Mrs. Cubitt ... "it expresses the anguish of love, something that most humans have.felt at one time."
Do you ever wonder what your tastes in music will be when you get older? Will you still be listening to The Beastie Boys, Pearl Jam, or DefLeppard? Mr. Traynor says that his tastes have changed "quite dramatically ... from Barry Manilow to Z.Z. Top." Although styles of music have changed over the years, C.C.I. teachers say that "rock 'n' roll is here to stay!"
