THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF WORK?
It seems as though most high school students either have a job or are looking for one. In fact, the first part of the newspaper that teenagers read is often the Help Wanted ads. Whether they are saving for a car or their education, or would just like some extra spending money, a part-time job is often the only way for students to get the money they need.
Most students seem to like their jobs. Jodi Marwood claims "I like the people I meet". Joel Shears likes the fact that his job is "easy". Laura Demers and Mike Berry both like their co-workers, and Charity MacDonald said that her job at the Public Library may help her to "get a job on a university campus".
Miranda McSorley doesn't have her sights set as far away. She just "likes the money"!
Of course, nothing is ever perfect. Many students find that it is hard to juggle work and school and still have a social life. Charity MacDonald stays up "very, very late. I take in a lot of caffeine". Mike Berry juggles the three "very carefully", while Alisha Hutch- ings simply states "It's very hard". There are often other problems as well. "Really cold days are hard" for Lonica Hennebury, a snowboard instructor. Mike Green remembers the time he "burnt (himself) while baking bread". Deanna McMillan doesn't like "cus- tomers with attitudes". Jason Long doesn't like "shovelling snow.
'Nuff said? Also, after nine months, I'm still 'the new guy"'. De- spite everything, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, as most people will tell you. Part-time jobs offer a way for students to earn money and gain valuable work experience at the same time. Who knows? They may lead to your future career!
