MOVING THE CLASSROOM INTO THE BUSINESS WORLD
My co-op education has been one of the most useful experiences in my high school career. Being able to receive hands on, work related tasks has not only provided me with excellent opportunities, which are directly related to the field in which I would like to study, but it has also given me valuable workplace skills in which every employer looks for in their employees. One of the best opportunities I have had in my co-op placement is being able to attend seminars and trade shows with the company. These experiences have given me a better understanding into the promotional and marketing industries through customer service, the benefits of using technology for efficiency and product knowledge ranging from colours or thread types used for embroidery to imprintable and engraveable materials. Another opportunity that I have been approached with is networking with other people within the marketing and advertising industries. I have had a chance to speak with them about their careers since I am hoping to enter the same field myself. I think this is of great value. Being able to meet people who are in a career which interests you, and asking them questions which may help you to decide whether you truly want to work in that area.
Every day I receive hands on experiences in the working world since I am dealing directly with the clients and suppliers, and being trusted by the company to tackle some of the daily tasks without supervision. My employers trust my judgement when it comes to product knowledge and my own capabilities that I am able to be a member of the company rather than a student who is merely working there. This obviously leads to great level of self-satisfaction for myself, and shows future employers that I am capable of being a leader and an effective member to the workplace.
I recommend co-op to everyone since there are so many different areas in the community in which students may gain knowledge and experience. Having the freedom and opportunity to learn in the workplace is such a great way to put your capabilities to the test. You can only benefit from this type of learning. This experience has helped me so much already, and I can not wait to be able to use my new skills in
