I attended high school in the late 1960's in Peter-borough. My high school was Kenner Collegiate and Vocational Institute. I think it was a great tme to be growing up.The 1960's was a time when a lot of the old rules went out the window. As teenagers, our lives were greatly affected by the music, movies and the sports of the times. Our hair grew longer and we put on blue jeans. We loved the bands - the Beatles, Stones, Beach Boys - to name a few.
We had a great high schooL Kenner had a terrific balance of athletic and academic achieve- ments. By Grade 13, I had wonderful friends who are still important in my life today. The school had teachers who cared, but had to cope with a lot of change at the time. There were . quite a number of characters among those teachers- Scotty and Nipper are two examples.
While at school, I played football and hockey. I still
remember that COSSA Championship football game against Oshawa that ended in a tie due to darkness! I enjoyed a number of subjects, including History, Geography and Math. I belonged to the History CLub and the Key Club. The Key Club was a community service club sponsered by Kiwanis. One of the highlights of the school year for this club was showing a Hollywood movie for elementary school students in om gym on a Saturday before Christmas. We collected a lot of cans of food for the Salvation Army Christmas Food Drive since this was the price of admission.
Kenner had monthly dances. We often had live bands. These were bands that were well known across Ontario like Little Caesar and the Consuls. We also had '·Sock Hops'' after basketball games in our gym on Friday nights. We had a great time!
As you can see, most of my memories of my high school days are great ones. As a matter of fact, I am looking forward to attending Kenner' s 50th Anniversary this summer. I sure wish I had my '63 Chevy Imapala to go in!
