AMER'ICA UNDER ATTACK
Tuesday September 1]th was described as an act ofwar as the nation came to a virtual stand still. The New York Stock Exchange suspended trading. Disneyland in California and Disney World in Florida were evacuated as safety measures, and the Emmy Awards scheduled for September 16111 were postponed. The attacks began when a single passenger airline, hijacked en route to Los Angeles, slammed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center at 8:45am. At 9:03am the South Tower was struck by a second plane. A third plane dove into the Pentagon at 9:45, killing over 800 people. Just outside ofSomerset, Pa. A
fourth plane plummeted to the earth at ]0:10am. There were a total of 266 crew and passengers aboard the four airlines. In the end, the Twin Towers, a symbol of America's prosperity, had toppled, and the Pentagon, the seat of military might, was smouldering. Hundreds ofemergency workers entered the buildings and never came out. As a result of their heroic efforts, at least 300 firefighters were lost and over 70 police officers were missing. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all.
