very d.ay it seems like new computer terms are continually being applied to our dictionaries. Words Esuch as 'domain name', 'node', 'search engine' and' pixel' are commonly used in our language as we seek and write. Imagine teachers such as Mr. Berni, Mrs. Plater and Mr. Bennettt sitting in their high schools' back in .....the old days. During this period, they also used many computer terms in their everyday language, but were unaware ofit. This was because the personal computer didn't exist at that time. When they had 'cookies', they were usually consumed with a glass of milk. A 'window' was something that curtains were hung on and a 'chip' came off 'the old block'! A 'burn' always resulted in a blister and 'spyware' V;~as something usually found in a Christmas stocking and involved a magnifying glass and a ·secret decoder ring. My, but the times have changed. Today computers control just about every aspect of our lives. A telephone call will result in talking to a computer, withdraw money with a computer, get your
car fixed wi~h a computer, and even order a pizza with a computer. Your name is replaced with a number
thaUs recog ized by a computer. Try checking out a book from CCI' s library or logging in on a website .without your student number! In the future as you become parents, you may not have to give your baby a name. Forget naming your son after your father or your daughter after a favourite aunt. Simply give the child a number.
