·In Rememberance of Terry Fox
Twenty- five years ago, a young man dipped his artificial leg in the Atlantic Ocean and that one simple task began a dream. Initially Terry Fox's goal was to raise one dollar for every Canadian in order to find a cure for cancer as he ran across Canada. However , his Marathon of Hope was cut short near Thunder Bay when his cancei· returned. His dream still contin\.les today and though his journey was forced to end, his goal still continues on around the world. To date, niore than $360 million dollars bas been raised worldwide for cancer research and annual Ten·y Fox Runs are held in over 50 countries. It's no wonder that Terry was named one of the top 10 Canadians of all times and the Canadian Hero of the Century. Twenty- five years later, he still continues to inspire people everywhere and it was for this reason that the schools of Collingwood participated in a special run this year.
Beginning at CCI, the group gained momentum as it gathered up members fro1u the elementary .schools. Finishing around the CCI track, a sea ofwalkers began a chant of 'Terry Fox, Terry Fox' ..His name was spelled out on the field and Mr. Coukell began the cheer. of "Give. me a 'T' !'', "Give me an 'E' !''. Several teachers commented that they had no doubt that Terty was looking down on the group, wearing a huge smile and giving them a big 'thumbs up'. Mr. Tudor and Mrs. O'Leary, up on the school roof to shoot photos, agreed that they had the best location in order to experience the true impact of hundreds of walkers. Terry's dream will definitely continue through the students of 'the Wood.'
