The 10 minute break was started in 2006 by Heather Baldwin and quickly became popular at CCI. The name came from the 10 minute breaks between our classes; the goal was to be able too read the newspaper during that break. Ms. Wilkinson said that she would be the staff advisor, and starting off with just a few simple news stories, club news, and great comics, The 10 Minute Break was born.
After Heather Baldwin left, Corey Scott and Hannah Currie stepped up to take the role of co-Editors. The design changed slightly, the content expanded, and the newspaper grew, with polls, pictures, poems, and sudokus. The popularity of the newspaper just kept growing, but then Corey and Hannah graduated.
It seemed the newspaper was doomed without anyone to take their place, until Sam Roebotham and Tori Morning came along! They decided that there were enough journalists, but not enough readers. With tonnes of annoucements and posters, the word got out. The newspaper got a spot on the school website, Mrs. Musselman made the team delivery bags, and people started reading.
The newspaper must be cursed in the Editor department, though, because Sam transferred to Vanier. Tori and Ms. Wilkinson worked hard to get more writers for the newspaper, but it seemed everyone wanted to read it and no one wanted to write it. Then Bobbie-Jo Stewart decided to be more than just an occasional journalist and started to work hard recruiting writers. She was quickly promoted to Assistant Editor and the 10 Minute Break regained footing.
Now complete with movie reviews, book reviews, club news, letters from the principal, recipes, birthday annoucements and so much more, The 10 Minute Break is a pillar at CCI.
If you would like to write for the newspaper next year, we would love to have you! We meet every Tuesday at 11:45 in room 130, or you can email us at the10minutebreak@hotmail.com
