On January 20th, 2009, Barack Obama was sworn in as the 44th President of the United States. More than one million people gathered in Washington, D.C. to witness the event; and when you include the number oftelevision viewers, it was among the most observed events ever by a global audience. Obama made headlines again on October 9 when he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace for his "extrodinary efforts to strengthen intematioinal cliplomacy and cooperation between peoples". On January 15th, 2009, US Airways Flightl549 crashed landed in the Hudson River
in New York City shortly after takeoff. "Prepare for impact!" was all the pilot told
the passengers before making the emergency landing. Miraculously, all 155 passengers including a baby were saved from an icy and f1rey death thanks to the expertise and bravery of pilot Chelsey B. "Sully" Sulenberger.

On June 25, the world heard of Michael Jackson's untimely death at the age of 50. Known as the
King of Pop, Jackson had the best selling album of all time, titled Thriller, which according to Wikipedia had sold I10 million copies worldwide. On August 28, The LA County Coroner's Office relased an official statement saying that Jackson's death was a homicide caused by a combination of drugs in his system. His public memorial service was held on July 7, and was broadcast live around the world, attracting a global audience of up to one billion people.

On October 15, 2009, in Fort Collins, Colorado, six year old Falcon Heene's parents claimed he had floated away in a homemade balloon. It was later cliscovered that this was an elaborate hoax put on by the boy's parents, Richard and Mayumi Heene in an attempt to secure a reality show deal. Richard Heene was sentenced to 90 days in jail, while Mayumi Heene served 20 days in weekend jail.
