She's My Rock -By Taylor May
Martin leaving for Afghanistan was extremely hard. I was going through a difficult time prior to her leaving and she became my rock and as much as she hates to be called it, because she's too young, she became like a mother to me. Seeing her a few times before she left for Afghanistan was difficult. I was too scared to talk
or letter I mailed I was always scared that it would be the last. Some people who don't know Martin or are new to the school and read this may wonder , wow all for a teacher, but the truth is she is more than a teacher. Ask any student that spends all of fourth period j ust sitting in her class because they just want to be with her, or any rugby girl that fights to sit closest to her on the
games .
She's much
to her want
because
I really
didn 't
to say good bye; I was always scared it would be my last. We spoke most of the time she was in Afghan istan exchanging emails and letters. I even made a Facebook page so we could all share are love and support. I never stopped stressing and worrying about her over there, I constantly checked the news to make sure nothing was on there about her, every email I sent
breaking her leg (of which I thought would be the best idea , and volunteered to help), moving to an underground bunker stocked with canned spam and brown beans, locked away with me having the only key or cutting her hair, dying it pink (a lot better than her current hairstyle) and sending her to a plastic surgeon for emergency face re-arrangement (I also said that I could do that a lot cheaper!)
Since she decided that these ideas were all too much work (we all know her work ethic!) she
Many people over the course of Miss Martin's tour asked how I was doing . (Honestly , we needed a break - too much time with Miss Martin causes headaches , nausea and
serious pains in the back side!) But since I was supposed to have missed her, worried and been concerned, that's what I'll write about.
When Miss Martin first told me about the possibility of going on tour, we sat down and brain- stormed many ways to keep her from going. These included, but weren't limited to,
decided to go and test her luck with the T aliban! (Insert many quips and quotes from Martin about them being better than hanging out with 'Johns! ' ) Miss Martin finally left after a million going away parties (most hosted by yours truly!) at which time our 8 Y2 month email relationship started . She seemed to have a lot of time on her hands (so sometimes I doubted she was even in a war-ravaged country ) as I, and many others , received multitudes of emails, many of which had clocks, and count
down charts of when she would be able to come home . Every once in a while they would contain stories of shooting and gunfire (but I think she made that up!) Then, wouldn't you know it, she was home and it was like she never left! So you have to ask yourself, did she really go on tour in Afghanistan, act as a liaison for women 's rights , try to keep the peace while on border patrol and overall , support Canada 's peace- keeping missions? Or, like the myths of Aliens and UFO's was it all just a story?
be the last I heard from her and my 'older sister' wouldn't be coming home . Miss Martin is an amazing, intelligent, caring woman and is much more than a teacher and even a friend. She is my older sister and I'm honoured to have someone like her in my life. I'm so

When I heard Miss Martin got
assigned to serve in Afghani- stan, I was not only upset and very worried but I was also extremely proud to have some- one so close to me making a difference in the world. I had the privilege of having Miss Martin teach me in both semes- ters last year and, along with a few other students spent
countless hours with her on my lunch period. Throughout this time, we grew very close. She made a huge impact on my life and continues to do so each day. Whenever I needed some- one to talk to, she was there. WhenImissedthebus, she'dbe willing to go out of her way to make sure I got home safely. When I was having trouble with m
homework, one text and she would be at the nearest Tim Horton's to make sure I finished my homework with full under- standing. She's the older sister I've always wanted (seeing as she's "too young to be a mother). Even when she was gone she made sure we kept in · contact, andeveryday Iworried those messages would
