Terry Fox lost his leg to cancer when he was a teen. While in the hosPital going through chemo. he was affected bY the amount of suf- fering cancer actually had. In his words. "Somewhere the hurting must stoP."
TerrY Fox began his Marathon of HoPe
on APril 12. 1980 in St. John·s Newfoundlan
He ran 26 miles Per daY. 'l days a week. The equivalent of a marathon a daY. TerrY Fox hoPed to raise one dollar for each of Canada's 24
million PeoPle.
fox had become a national star by t~1e time he reached Ontario!
HaJ'f.way across Canada. outside Thunder BaY. Ontario. the cancer sPread to his lungs. and he was forced to end his marathon on SePtember 1st after running for 5.313 km in 143 daYs.
He had raised $1.'l million uP to that Point. however donations con- tinued to Pour in. and bY the fol- lowing APril. over $23 million had been raised. His hoPes of uv~:~ ~.:. coming the disease and comPleting his marathon
ended when on June 28.

Fox was the youngest Person ever named a ComPanion of the Order of Canada.
He is considered a national hero and has many things. buildings. roads and Parks named
in his honour across the countrY. Terry Fox is a great influence to peoPle who suffer cancer. He has not onlY made PeoPle stronger but he has definateiY brought hoPe to PeoPle who suffer with this terrible disease.
