ducalion was a priority for the early inhabitants of Collin8wood E A 8rammar school had been established in 1857. before the town incorportated in 1858. A 8rammar school was for older students from well-to-do families who learned subjects such as math. french and an- cient and modern history. As there were no public buildin8s at the Lime and no schoolhouse. a 8rammar school was started in 1857 in the Interna- tional Motel. on the south-east corner of Murontario and oimcoe otreets. where the Bank of Montreal is now. otudents had to pay to attend and the Mead-master for the first three years was Qeverend John Lan8try. whose
salary was $100 a year. The school moved a lot in the early years. from the True Blue Mouse. now the site of the Gayety Theatre. to a frame house on the east side of Pine otreet. and then to Qock Court. Qev Lan8try·s home on ot. Vincent otreet. The school was then Biven quarters in part of the town hall. which was also occupied by the Oran8e Mall and the fire hall. It stood at the north entrance to the railway 8rounds. near the present museum. The buildin8 was moved across the street in 1873 where it now stands as a residence at 38 ot. Paul otreet.
