ON 'l'llE COMING OF SPRlNG
The Spring is here! The signs are every- where,
The birds have come, the buds are treak- ing ont;
T11e dull and wintry skies are bright and fair,
That Nature's waking, there can be no doubt.
The spring! the spring! the sound is in the air
Of spring! of spring! the signs are every- where.
WALTER RICE, IV.
.A SONNET
From out the heavy pall of darkling clouds Upon a dreary sodden world of gray, Piercing the mists which hide like shrouds, The land beneath, a .faint and irriclescent
ray.
The dawn of a new hope, a promise fair, Of many bright to-morrows, happier days, A shedding of all sorrow, worry, care, And in the end a road to better ways.
To those in whom long sorrow, harrowing grief,
And grim despair have crushed all hope in life.
May He in His great mercy send relief, A little ray, 1o comfort in the strife.
I hope in some dark time He may
As comfort send me a faint and iridescent
The brooklet, woods,
flashing,
bat bles
thro' the
Brealdng through the icy bonds of winter's gates,
The sound of twittering comes murm'ring on the breeze,
As the birdlets whisper love songs to their mates.
Some early flowers come peeping where the snow
A few short clays ago held sway,
The grass, the wind, the sun, all seem to
know
Ano.Lher spring has surely come to stay.
ray.
