THE CLASS OF 46-47 George LawrenQe
This year's Grade XIII can't boast of any wonderful scholars, indeed, now that Wally Cook has left us, we can't even point to any outstanding athletes. We're mostly just average people, leading a humdrum life, groping our way around the halls like absent~minded sheep. Grade XIII customarily sets an example for the rest of the school, but it seems to me that we're usually on the short end of any comparison with other forms.
Fifth formers do, however, lead in most of the school's activities: the Student Council is all from Upper School-W ally Cook was elected presi- dent Fran Maitland is Editor of the Glea~er, H e l e n B u t l e r a n d B i l l A l l a n are convenor's of girls' and boys' ath- letics Jim Belcher is president of the Liter~ry S o c i e t y , a n d I s a b e l H u r s t i s the school Social Convenor.
Our class also shone in the school's athletics. Wally Cook was a standout on the track and basketball teams, and fifth formers held all but one spot on the senior Cossa basketball. Bob Wright, Paul Van Nest and Bill Allan represented the .P'ood ol' c.c.r. at the Ski Meet , ann Helen Butler, Bertha M o r r i s a n d M a r y Fohim~on w e r e t h e ha<'kbon e of the ·girls' Cossa basket- ball tf'am.
Fifth form didn't hold any class parties. We didn't go on any sleigh- rirl~><. W e didn't hold any dances. Fift.h form does its homework! All winter long, the midnight oil burned, and if you don't believe it, just look at our marks! (nobody had better call tloat hluff!)
But of course it. isn't all work; who <'a.n stay gloomy with Freddy Rentner <'nntinualhr telling his not-so-ori!dnal i o k e ><. ~n<l N k k L a - z a r o u e v e r l a s t i n g l y looking for a nun or some other grim hnmour? An<I who can "t.ay ont of +h'l <''lnvers,tion when 'Meatba11' Wri.,.ht. starts running <lown the To- l'onto Maple Leafs'! F.very morning the boys get into a full Reale debate over the latest hockev. basketball. or rugbv game. So. although our form ha~n't nrovf'd outstanding-, we'll get by and not without our share of humour.
And a word to the lower forms, from one who has just about finished
his sentenee at the old school- if you don't like dancing, shows, or entertainment, if you'd rather get ahead in life and work hard; if you want to make a wreck of yourself- see how many subjects you can take in Upper School!!
GRADE 12 1947 Bob Fawcett
We have this semester a grade 12 of repute which is something to swag- ger about, since we ~ll__casualiies of j;Qg_ war -¥ears in the lower_ forms. Our gifted and· talented students will leave their footprints in the sands of time, some may be flat or crooked, but they will be prints.
You might gather from the fore- going statements that our ' grade 12 is more on the scholarly line, 1but our athletic achievements speak for them- selves. Bob Fryer, a great athlete of the future, won the senior high jump of the school and successfully competed in the Tudhope meet. Girls basket- ball teams were bolstered bv six of our feminine basketball prodigies, Joan McLean, Mary Bourrie, Joyce Lambert, Mariorie Lavers. Dorothy Ford and Louise Caron. These girls were among the best in the school and would make a good team in themselves. The bovs of grade 12. although only seven ·in number, had three representatives on the COSSA teams. Boh Fryer, Sheldon Reduath and 1Bob "Louie" Fawcett. lnterform basketball was won by a boys grade twelve-thirteen coalition hut our girls fared none too well al- though giving a good account of them- ~:wlves. W e c a n a l s o b o a s t t h e o n l y g-irl in Bettv Dancy, who can play volley-ball sitting- down or on her knees. nf'rhans sugge..'lting the ingenuity of this form.
Four of our boys, Bob FryPr. Bob li'aw~ett.. Sheldon Redpath and Howard Gillie,:; h>tve at.t.ained Dominion marks- nlan badrres which could hp gotten only hv f'honting 10 t.arg-eh with a score of 90 or ·better. F.ven higher in marks- manf'hip are Sheldon Redpath, our Rt.rathrona medal winPf'r, and Bob Fawcett who have shot lO tar<retl'l with a scorP. of 95 or better to win the ex- perts badge.
