V al looked up.
"Oh, Rick, do sit down,!1 she offered hastily.

They sat there stupidly, avoiding each others
glances. .
Finally she burst out with, "1 hope you do well at
Passeville." "Thanks. "
Then a few moments l ater he said, "I'm glad someone doesn't mind me going. Gosh! I nearly got my ears
burnt off!"
They elapsed into silence again until Val felt she should say something in explanation.
ItUh--I tried to tell her that it was an important game. After all if you beat them---"
"Yeah, I know, but she thinks that a dance is more import ant . I told her that they were taking spectators. Besides we'd be back in time to get in a few dances, but, no sir, not her. No dances--no more dates at all."
V al's eyes opened wide.
"She stlid that?"
"Yeah, so I said, okay no more dates, and off she
went." He was quite pleased with his boldness.
