of the car a nd standing be'side her. ' "Betty :followed me
around all evening. I couldn't get away from her. She
practically asked 111e to ' tak's 'he';r~ home. Honestly Peg, I
really wanted to take you home. That's why I cane after ,'
you. Please come to Pete's and hav'e a snack. It" s only "

Soon they drove in sight of Pete's Snack Bar' which
was lit outside by bright red ' and green 'bulbs.
Over hot dogs ~nd hot"chocolite, Peggy tol~ ~ob how
she came to hate the rain. 'He sympathiz'ed withtler. Then she told him about Shep who was fourteen years old. Her father had 'told her 'that Shep hadn't 'much chance of re- covering from his illn~is:
