It affords me a great deal of pleasure to contribute to the current issue of the C.D.C.I. Y ear Book. "The Gleaner".
The District Board are hopeful that the new District Collegiate will open its doors on January 1, 1954. The completion of this building will mark, we hope, a new era in education throughout the district it will serve. It will pro- vide for the students a much more varied course of study, and allow all to study and perfect themselves in those subjects they like best. It is true that the academic course, as it is now constituted, will be needed for those who desire to enter the professions .but greater emphasis will be placed upon the arts and crafts, music and the various business courses.
To those students who graduate this year the Board offers its heartiest congratulations. Some of you will enter college; some will go into business; some will enter the nursing profession; but all of you~ no matter what course you may pursue, can look back with pride and a grateful and fond remembrance of the days spent in the Collingwood Collegiate. Be careful to measure up to your responsibilities. Shum the "isms" as you would the Bubonic plague, and do not be lulled into a false sense of security by the pledges and promises of the Com- munist or other subversive groups. Stand firm for the freedoms as you know them and the government with which you are familiar.
The undergraduates, especially those in the lower grades, will have the benefit of a new modern school building and it will be their duty and privilege to carry on and leave their good record behind them as have their predecessors. To the undergraduate is given the opportunity to carry on the traditions of the past, in the academic field, in sport and in civil life. You cannot fail be- cause you have a great heritage left you by every former student of the school.
The Board offers its congratulations to all those students and advisers who make this issue of "The Gleaner" possible. We are deeply appreciative of the needs and desires of both the student body and the teaching profession. We can promise you co-operation, assistance and our sincere best wishes for the years ahead.
J.R.H.Graham, MD.,C . M., Creemore Chairman C.D.D.I. Board.
