C. D. C. I. C.oncert Band Music Director-Mr. J. Knights
President-D. Wambold
The school year of 1959-60 commenced early for the Concert Band. Practices began in A.lgust in preparation for the C. N. E. competition on the first week-end of Septem- ber. The Concert Band1 under their new director Mr. Knights1 gave a worthy per- formance at the Canadian National Exhibition. The band placed second1 just behind Barrie1 earning 170 points and $150.00.
School reopening meant the Commencement. The band provided the music for the evening1 and also played their C. N. E. competition 1 "Fantasy for Band."
October proved to be a most enjoyable month for the band. On October 241 the Concert Band journeyed to Bancroft1 Ontario, where they presented an evening concert with the Bancroft Band. The students at Bancroft gave the C.D.C.I. band members night accomodation. The response of those at the concert proved that they thoroughly enjoya:l theC.D.C.I. Band's rendition of "Jam Session"-Mr. Knights playing his version of the solo trumpet part1 and Miss Stephenson conducting.
On October311 the Concert Band accepted an invitation from Mr. Hollier and went to Camp Borden to play at their High School Commencement.
November brought last minute preparations for the return concert of the Bancroft Band. They arrived November 71 and the C .D .C .I. and Bancroft Bands presented a very enjoyable concert at the C. D.C .I. Mr. W. Fisher of Barrie Collegiate was guest conductor.
Average routine reigned in December. Everyone began settling down to study for exams1 and bond activities were few.
The Concert Bond began practising more with the January classes starting again. They played at Parents' Night; olso1 the Collegiate Concert Bond and the Town Band presented a Benefit Concert for the family of Mr. W. Newby.
For Bond members1 February meant work1 excitement1 and bad nerves--Kiwanis was the reason. On February 131 the Band entered a competition at Lawrence Park Col- legiate1 Toronto. They placed third1 receiving 72 points (70 points is necessary to place at all). Also1 on February 201 the Bond was to enter competitions at L. Park Collegiate and Eaton's A.lditorium. Unfortunotely1 the worst storm of the winter made it impossible for the band to reach Toronto.
On February 24, a clarinet quartet consisting of Dianne Paterson1 Leone Raymer1 Anieta Thomas1 and Judy Duffin competed in an open competition at Kiwanis. In a class of five contestant groups1 the C.D.C.I. quartet received First place with 83 points. The quartet gave a very fine performance.
Since the C .D.C.I. concert band could not get to Kiwanis on the 20th1 they were allowed to play their test numbers on February 27. The band played extremely well 1 receiving 80 points in the "E-Fiat Suite1" three points behind the first ploce1 and 83 points in the open competition1 just two points behind the winning band and two points ahead of Barrie Collegiate Band.
AI together1 the C .D .C .I. Concert Band did extremely well at and is to be con- gratulated for its success.
