Junior Basketball
That song 1 "Hang Down Your Head Tom Dooley, "might very well have been attached to this year's Junior Basketball team. This was to be the year that the Juniors would be battling for the title, but instead they were mired deep in the cellar of the league.
Their coach, Mr. Paton1 had this to say about their downfall, "As from our record, it is logical to say that we did not score enough basketsj but the real reason or reasons for our disappointing record can only be known by the players themselves."
The season started with a 22-17 loss to Midland--this was justified by the fact that it was their first game. Next followed a defeat at the hands of Orillia on the C.D. C .I . 's Athletic Night, and then came an overwhelming defeat by Barrie Central. By now a feeling of impatience had swept over the school as they could no longer stand for the Junior's losses. The surrender to Barrie North was, to put it bluntly, the last straw. The day following this loss, their obituary was read over the afternoon's an- nouncements.
It was grimly ironical that the Juniors should play their greatest game of the season by slaughtering All iston 64-8 just when it was the last game of the season and they were resting in the basement of the league.
However, despite their losses, the team produces some excellent player> with their first line of Ed Dunn, Wayne Carpenter, Alec Besse, Jerry Rogers, and Orval Thompson seeing much of the action. Midway in the season, Wayne Clement shone brightly as did Van Schmidt. Dean McDermid and Aubrey Sawyers filled there- maining spots on the roster. The forgotten person on the team was the manager, Wayne McCartney, who did an excellent job in looking after all those seemingly little things.
AI though they suffered a number of defeats, some hum iIiating, other> bitterly fought, they were pi aying their best for the C.D.C.I.
