Track And Field
Prior to the Tudhope Meet in Midland, a column in the local paper stated that the boys would finish last but, lo and behold, they fooled the writer and possibly others equally uncertain of their skill by finishing third. The official standings showed them to be within a point or two of second place, Midland-Penetang.
The boys led most of the way in the meet but faltered going down the home stretch. Individually, Collingwood produced two double winners in Dave Butters, who won the Senior 100 and 220 yd. dashes, and Bill Gilbert, who placed first in the Junior Pole V ault and High Jump. But it was in the Intermediate division that the C. D.C. I. accumulated its points, as the following placed either first or second:
Alex Besse ..• ...•........ •... ......... 1st in High Jump Dave Armstrong ............• • .........• .. 1st in Pole Vault Doc Storey ................• .....• ...... 2nd in Shot-put Chuck McNichol • ...• • .............• ... 2nd in 880 yd. dash Wayne Noble .• • .....• • ..• ....• ..• .... 2nd in 220 yd. dash
The coaches, Mr. Titus, Mr. Gough, and Mr. Paton, did excellent jobs in leading their team, which had been underestimated, to one of the three top positions.
With such an impressive showing, the hopes are high for next year's team.
