The 1926 edition of The Gleaner carried the news of the opening of the new Collingwood Collegiate Institute which was built to replace the old school destroyed by fire in December
1923.
The Gleaner has since recorded the opening of the present Area school in the year 1954.
This year will see not only the completion of substantial additions to the present school but will also mark the commencement of construction of a second school on the outskirts of the town of Stayner.
This too will be duly noted in the columns of The Gleaner in the years ahead.
The school newspaper and the annual edition of The Gleaner thus not only provide information and amusement for the student body of the school but1 as well, record the history
of progress in education in this area.
The original buildings of the Coli ingwood District Collegiate Institute provided accom- modation for 710 pupils. With the enlargements now completed, a school population of 890 can be comfortably and efficiently housed while the new school at Stayner will have an original capacity of four hundred students.
With the growth of the student body, the prestige and the usefulness of The Gleaner will steadily increase and, to the editors1 contributors and all who take an active part in its pre- paration, I express the hope that you will always keep The Gleaner an active and progressive force in the Iife of the school.
You who are attending the C.D.C.I. may well take pride in your school. It's buildings are among the finest in the land; its campus spacious and pleasant; its history, with that of its predecessors, now extending over one hundred years, is above reproach.
You may count yourself fortunate in being able to attend C.D.C.I. and come under the tutelage of the fine staff of teachers and instructors who have associated I themselves with our school and who are keenly interested in advancing you through the various steps of your education.
A great world lies open to you in this atomic and space age and your education at C.D. C.l. will be the greatest single aid to your enjoyment of all the 'M:>nders and exciting develop- ments which will occur during your Iifetime.
Best wishes to a successful 1960 edition of The Gleaner and our greetings to the entire Staff and Student Body.
On behalf of the Board ofTrustees of C.D.C.I.
