It often seems that a team which has the best potential finishes in the cellar. This was the cas~ with the Senior Football team of this year. A large turnout, con- sisting of many experienced players, led to hopes of a victorious season.
It appeared as though the optimism · well-founded as the team, led by fur J( Ben Carruthers, and inspired by a .ely field-goal by T erry Gordon, defeated a. t:rong Orillia team in the league opener. However, in the second game, even a strong defense led by Doug Dalgarno and Frank Hale could not contain the passing attack of Orillia Park Collegiate which came from behind to win by a narrow margin.
This game set the pattern for the season. A strong defense consisting of such competent players as Dale Plater, Ross Chessell, John Walsh, Wilbur Scrannage, andGrantHammill held the opposition to short gains but the offense under the guidance of quarterbacks Tom Gillis and Bruce Abbotts never seemed to be able to sustain a formidable attack.
Looking at the statistics, Collingwood was strong in every department from yards gained to punt returns, where Fred Sproule

sparkled. Ironically, despite having the worst offensive record in the league, every back- fielder on the team, including newcomers to the fullback slot-- Bob Kerr, Bob Stoutenberg, and Paul Smart as well as veteran Ben Carruthers, gained well over 5 yards a carry. Also Don French, Bob Simpson and Don Dawson caught numerous passes for over
450 yards. ·
Remembering that the team spirit was
tremendous, that the coaching of Mr. Russell and Mr. Freudeman was superb, and that even the statistics looked good, one might ask "How did we manage to lose?" The only answer that can be offered to that question is that old adage, "The luck of the game."
In closing, the team would like to thank Mr. Russell and Mr. Freudeman for their patient efforts and to say that phrase which is being made a cliche by Collingwood football teams, "Wait 'til next year."
