 Knowledge is Power
Senior 1st
Have you ever thought of the purpose of man's existence on this earth? If you take the Scriptural point of view, you get an answer something like this: God created man to have dominion over all other creatures- fish, fowl, and beasts, and his purpose has been the achievement of that dominion.
Certainly man has proved himself to be the dominant species within recent geologic times. He has grown in numbers and in power until today there is no earthly creature that can surpass him. Thus if man's original purpose was to establish his ·dominion', he has certainly done so. What then, remains as a purpose for modern man?
Is it possible that a slight variation in the original purpose can supply modern man with a reason for existence or a purpose in his progress? Is it possible that the more intelligent among men must prepare themselves to dominate other menof lesser abilities? In the battle for survival in today's world, it is brain rather than brawn that counts, and in this complex and highly competitive world, the emphasis is likely to become greater as time goes on. Thus knowledge, refined and developed through education, appears to be the key to power and domination.
Winter Stillness
Harvey Graham XIIC Senior 2nd
As night slowly fell on the white countryside, a breathtaking stillness fell over the land. Slowly the moon rose above the frosted peaks of the distant mountains and shone down on the deathly silence. Even the trees, which usually voiced their thoughts loudly to the surroundings, were quiet this night. They stood like sentinels, silhouetted against the dark blue sky. In the distance, the pure glimmer of the snow was broken by the dark stillness of an evergreen, forest. As I listened, no sound broke the silence, and I wondered why the entire earth could not enjoy the same peace as I.
But even as !thought ofthis, a slight breeze began to stir the trees and dark clouds swirled over the peaks, threat of a storm to come. Shivenng, I turned to leave as the first dry flakes of snow drifted down from the sky. I bade a silent farewell to this land and made my way back to the rush and confusion of the city.
