This year the members of the Reach for the Top team are: Tom Hammond, lain Paste, Chris Radke, Dave McLeod and Jill Browne~ Our coach is·Mrs. Stoutenburg. So far this year we have played four games and won three , making us the winners of our flight. If we win our next two games, we will be the station champions and thus will proceed to the provincial finals.
A lot of people have asked me about Reach for the Top, so here's what it's like.
After driving to Wingham in weather that is invariably bad, we eat dinner at Lee 's. If Mrs. Stoutenburg picks up the cheque for dinner, we will win. (We lost our first game because financial worries were too heavy on our heads).
After dinner, time permitting, some members of our team adjourn to the local billiards parlour for intellectual stim- ulation . Following this brief diversion, we tour over to the CKNX station for the taping of the show . Before the actual game, we spend about twenty minutes in the coffee shop sizing up the opposition. Sometimes they are accompanied by a drill-sargeant type person who fires such questions at them as, "Who was Henry VIII's barber?"
"Delilah?" and so on.
Finally it's time to tape the game , so we herded into the studio proper. The announcer, affectionately known as Roger Ramjet , arrives and fires a few practice questions at us. Once our button fingers are limbered up, and everyone has ample time to play with their buzzer, the game begins.
We're going to win, you can just tell.
Roger fires the question and we're really on our toes with the answer.
"What famous movie actress continued to act following the amputation of one leg?"
Buzzzzzzz
"Yes- lain Paste of Collingwood- - " "Raquel Welch?"
