"Mighty Mere" Mercer, the English teacher who would break down in tears if she didn't know the answer to a question? No, such admiration was bestowed upon Mr. K.G. "Rosie" Rose, " an all-round nice teacher".
During his days at North Toronto Collegiate, Mr. Martin could be found playing football or baseball on the school teams, studying the trombone in the band and retaining his "average" in academic subjects. Some time in between all o f this , he went steady with a cute little girl named "Karen".
Mrs. Chaudet, a graduate of Donevan C.I. in Oshawa, can be credited with setting many records in her high school. She not only represented the school in provincial track meets, but was also the first girl to be named " Athlete of the Year" . (Women's Lib was unheard of during this time!) Her 'greatest claim to fame', however, was being the first person ever to be home from the Sr. Prom by 10:30 p.m. Described as being " the longest 2112 hours of my life", her date felt the need to dance on her feet instead of the floor. Mrs. Chaudet's school attire? A mini-skirt, a baggy sweater and granny glasses. She also loved to dance to the music of the Monkees - when there were FOUR members in the group!
It seemed like on!y yesterday that Mr. Gardiner was a high school student at Montreal C.I. and Oakwood C.I. in Toronto. When he wasn't busy singing in the choral club, he was dating a cute French girl named Olga, known for her purple eyes. And what would this student dressed in his " moccasins and droopy pants" do on his first date? They sat and fed the squirrels!
Mr . V andeweerdhofmight have been the star of his Amster- dam high school soccer team, but was too short to make the basketball team. Although he was considered an " average " student, he was expelled several times for numerous offences that he did not wish to discuss . Mr. V. wore a white jean jacket to school EVERY day and his hair was past his shoulders. His first date at the age of 16 was to a 'Santana' Concert.
Mr. J. Moore still shutters when he thinks of his first date at the age of 15 with a girl named Mary. Why this reaction? "She was a 'dog', she asked ME out to a school dance, stepped on my feet all night and then kissed ME goodnight! UGH!!!". However, this student at R.H. King C.I. in Scarborough did experience more pleasant times during his high school career playing football, cross-country skiing and by setting such school records as being the only student to ever fail the music tone test.
A tall, lanky student at A.B. Louis Sec. School in London could be seen wandering into history class, his least favorite, wearing a pair of cut-offs. Mr. Hirst's favorite class, however, was grade 13 phys.ed. He spent a great deal of time playing on the football, golf, basketball and soccer teams as well as being a star performer in the drama club. When asked about his first date, his collegues replied that "he hasn't had a first date yet!" (There is always a joker in every crowd, eh Mr . Hirst!!!)
Mr. Richmire has always enjoyed a love of math even while in attendance at Iroquois Seaway H.S.. He considered the sub- ject to be "easy as there are only two numbers". English, however, was his downfall for he simply hated to read. A former member of both rugger and baseball teams, Mr. Richmire was forced to be expelled from school, although he felt it was an error. He claimed that he WAS NOT harrassing Mrs. Backwell, a 68 year old French teacher!
Mr. Aikens, a Barrie North C.l. student was considered to be very "mischievous" in high school. He described his best subject as "NONE" and his worst subject as "ALL" . He did however, star on the football team even though he only played ''to get the leather jacket"! Barrie North girls during this period LOVED leather football jackets!
Mr. Hamlin describes his first date at the age of 16 as "Close Encounters" ! Is there a hidden meaning in this, Mr. Hamlin? NO! That was the name of the movie that the girl (whose name was either Pat or Carol) asked HIM to see and he was scared to death! A member of the tennis, volleyball and wrestling teams, our music teacher also played trombone in his high school band. It is very understandable that his favourite teacher was the band director. Mr. Hamlin, however, does not
have such fond memories of Mrs. "Squeegy" Heatley, a teacher ''with zero sense of humour!''
Mr. Grant was a student at Collingwood Collegiate when it
was still housed in what is presently Admiral Collingwood
School. He enjoyed participating on the curling team, but his
greatest interest was being the band's " Warrant Officer". He
was given this prominent position not because of his musical 9 '"'-.....,,__ _ ability , but because he was "superb at marching" . Mr. Grant
described himself as "very short and very cocky - not a plea-
sant student!" His English teacher, Mr. " George" Barr could
attest to the statement . One day , as soon as Mr. Barr closed the
classroom window, our technical director ran over and opened
it up again . The window continued to be opened and closed un-
til the teacher's patience level reached an all-time low. At this
point, Mr. Grant was chased around the room with a yardstick
and the window remained down!
Another former C.C.l. grad was Mr. Cook. He played the trumpet and French horn in the band as well as being active on the football , soccer, curling and rifle 10

staff
teams. He, however , derived his greatest
pleasure from being on the golf team and
his skill level showed dramatic improve-
ment after being tutored by a pretty
female named Anne. Mr. Cook attended
every high school dance and jived to the
tunes of Paul Anka. Like Elvis, the idol
of the day , he wore his hair in a
"ducktail". He can only describe his high school days as " the best years of my life" . He, along with each member of the staff, sincerely hope that you will look back upon your days at C.C.l. as THE BEST YEARS OF YOUR LIFE!!!
