The C.C.I. Senior Boys Basketball Team enjoyed its best season in the history of the school. This was the first time that CCI has captured a Senior Boys GBSSA championship and represented the Association at OFSSA. The team was headed to Timmins to compete in OFSSA at the time of printing.
The Senior Boys compiled a 25-8 win-loss record before OFSSA, a 9-1 win-loss league record, two consolation cham- pionships and were finalists in their own Collingwood McDonald's Senior Invitational. The Fighting Owls defeated a strong Barrier North squad 56-52 in the GBSSA semi-final and devastated Orillia District 71-56 in the final.
The Owls were led all year by Chris Fischer who led the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 28 points per game. Chis received numerous honours in 1988-89 including Wasaga Beach Athlete of the Year and membership on the Ontario Juvenile Basketball Team.
The guards who ran the offense and controlled the tempo were Ray Sheffield and Tim Bulmer. Ray was chosen for the Simcoe County All-Star Team and Tim emerged as the most improved player of the year.
Up front, Reg Sheffield and Bob Robinson did a great job on defense and rebounding . The return of Mike Aikens and Kelly Mclennan strengthened the team during the stretch run to enable CCI to capture the championship. Mike Bellamy was steady, Garry Weatherall was inspiring and Shane Mountney rounded out the squad.
Coach Hirst would like to congratulate CCI 's Senior Boys for being "the best ever".
