one of us receives a piece of paper simnifvind1ha cornoletic•nof our high schpol career. It represents hard work and datermination of each of the graduates, gathared here ton\Qht. To many of you it is the ticket to'iurther educet on and to others it is the basis from which IIley can enter the real world . But there is so much more to !he last five years than just academic performance. Together as graduates we have grown emotionally, as we have shared our feelings, physically, as we have grown strong, and socially, as we have learned to live with each other. We have learned to appreciate those around us and more importantly we have learned to respect our· selves. But that is what high school is all about, learn- ing, and now that we know how, we are prepared to enter the world around us. Tonight is the night that we set aside to recognize the completion of this first part of our lives. It is the night that we look back and reminisce about our past while thanking all of those
whom made it all so very special.
The teachers were an essential part of this learning
process. They guided us through the problems of derivatives, and complex conjugates while making us appreciate Shakespearean literature. They added to our growth by teaching to us the advantages of work- ing hard and because of them we understand the words patience, persistence and determination. Out- side the classroom they headed up our very suc- cessful sports teams and showed us the value of sportsmanship and competition. To all of the teachers from the graduating class of 1988, we are indeed grateful to each of you, and thank you.
There is no doubt in my mind that the class of 1988 is one of the best. Teachers have often commented on the competitiveness of our year, and told us how they have enjoyed our eagerness. A reflection of this is in the number of Honour Roll Graduates, and in the excellent marks achieved by a majority of our class. This eagerness was never confined by the walls of the classroom but continued out onto the sports field and into the different clubs.
One of my fondest memories of the last 5 years was watching fellow students perform the play " Our Town Collingwood". T onight we, the graduates , are all sharing this stage before our family and friends in our final performance here at CCI.
It is not only a special night for the graduates but for our parents as well. We thank them for their support and guidance over the years. They have influenced our values, our goals, and our decisions for the future . They have shared in our successes and have sup- ported us in our disappointments but tonight they share in our accomplishments.
Ladies and gentlemen, honored guests, and fellow classmates I have been honored to speak before you this evening. Tonight's ceremony marks the end of an era and the beginning of an incredibly exciting future. The past has its times to remember and times to forget, but if we can learn from both the rights and the wrongs experienced by us then it may only brighten our future. As we continue to mature and grow in every way we will soon be able to use the skills we developed here, and to conquer all of the challenges that the world has to offer.
Thank-you and Good Luck. Greg Sybersma,
1988 Valedictorian
