A prominent newscaster labelled 1988 as 'The Year Without Heroes'. True, the year was touched with scandal, but after review- ing all of the events that took place during the days of 1988, we could find much to ad- mire. It was a notable year from the beginn- ing to the end. We cheered others on, we came together as one to help those less for- tunate, we learned from the p~st and moved forward. So here is 1988 in review. Recall the events that marked this year and look around you. There is likely a hero sitting right beside you.
COULD THIS BE TRUE?
- Vanna White appears in her first movie, 'The Goddess of Love' and everyone feels that she should stick to turning letters on "Wheel of Fortune"
- Mickey Mouse is 60 years old and Super- man turns 50. Both of these gentlemen do not look their age!
- John F. Kennedy Jr. is named 'Sexiest Male of the Year' while the female award goes to Jessica Rabbitt.
- Wayne Gretzky upsets many females by taking the walk down the aisle with Janet Jones. A month later he upsets all of Canada by announcing his move to the Los Angeles Kings.

- Ben Johnson - did he or didn't he?
- Prince Andrew and Princess Sarah became the proud parents of Princess Beatrice. Other than this one occasion, the press tended to continually bombard 'Fergie' with poor reviews
- the Space Shuttle began its launch pro- gram again
- 'French Only' signs appear in Quebec
- Ronald Reagan stepped down and George Bush stepped in as the new President of the United States. Prime Minister Brian Mulroney won with a majority re-election.
- Jimmy and Tammy Baker were back in the news again - this time on charges of fraud. -The Iraq - Iran War ended in a cease-fire. - the Americans shot down an lraqui passenger plane, claiming that it didn't identify itself
- 'Hurricane Gilbert' hit the Caribbean, leav-
ing hundreds of thousands homeless and gaining the title of the most intense hur- ricane in history
- an international joint effort allowed two Californian whales to be freed from an Alaskan ice jam that hindered their southern migration
- air shows are put on hold following a fatal crash of three jets into the audience during a West German show
-AIDS still continued to be a major medical threat
- the campaign to 'Don't Drink and Drive' gained great strength
ON THE LOCAL SCENE ...
- the Arlington Hotel was torn down, but the Cineplex went up
- Collingwood should have its name change to 'Condowood' with all of the development that sprang up in the western portion of the town. Others felt that with all of the develop- ment along with waterfront, the town could even·be named 'Legoland'
- our Mr. Wilkinson wins a Councilman position in the town of Creemore
- Wasaga Beach saw the end of the short- lived "World's Largest Sandcastle', alias "Dinosaur Park', alias . . .
- The Shipyard was almost completely dismantled
- C.C.I. student Elizabeth Sheffer not only got to call her father 'Dad', but 'Your Honour' as well as Joe Sheffer was named the new mayor of Collingwood
- after months and months of hard work and preparation, Mr. Knox saw his new book, 'Human Geography' roll off the presses
- he not only coached football and headed
1988 saw the spread of rumours that EMs Presley was alive and seen at numerous locales. Several students reported that he was seen at a football prac· lice one night assisting with the coaching. Upon further investigation, however, it proved only to be our own Mr. Traynor!
