Collingwood came home with all the gold at this year's O.F.S.A.A. Alpine Championships in Thunder Bay. We left Toronto International on Saturday via Air Canada. The next day was a training day at the government facility of Big Thunder. The temperature was -32°C. just cold enough to make one run be- fore having to come in for a war- mup. We also had the opportunity to catch the novice ski jumpers and a geography field trip to Fort Wil- liam (yes Becky. Old Fort Henry is in Kingston!) Monday was just as cold a day and the boys had the tough slalom event! After two racers D.Q.'d in the first run, it was left up to the top three boys to make it through the course. First Peter, then Sean and after the coach mistaking #18 for Dean (#18 missed the last gate in his run) a sigh of relief was made when Dean
·skied a record breaking run. We knew at that point that we had the Munroe Cup locked up even though the boys had to ski G.S. the next day.
The girls came through in the Giant Slalom as they all finished their runs to wind up first after the first day of competition. We had the same situation the next day as 2 girls also D.Q.'d in their first run. The pressure was on again, but Lisa, Andrea and Dallas all came through for the rest of the team and won the Robertson Shield for the girl's championship. Both teams out classed the field winning the combined Collingwood Cup (92 points to the nearest competitor's 364 points). This record was only matched once before and that was by C.C.I. in 1973.
A special thanks goes out to the assistant coaches Tom Moore, Audrey Stukas and Karen Kristie as well as Peter Wilcox and Becky Martin who helped support their teammates at the top of the hill and kept radio contact with Mr. Red- ding and Mr. Haiduk. Unfortunate- ly all who participated on the team couldn't make it to O.F.S.A.A. and they were: Dan Huycke, John Ham- ilton, Tanya Salter, ian Greig, Kit
