Fighting Owls Crush the Spring Competition
2001 C.C.I Track Team
This year was one of the best in recent memory for the Owls Track and Field Team. In all, 25 C.C.I athletes qualified from the North Zone meet to compete at the GBSSA Championships. There they captured four individual event championships and as a team Collingwood placed 5th out of 27 teams. The GBSSA champions included Jay Morril , Sasha Helmkay , Danielle O ' neil and Jon Cudney. Next was OFSAA regionals at York Univesity and once again the owls dominated as 7 athletes finished in the top four of their respective events thus qualifing for the OFSAA Championships in Etobicoke. Making it to this level means that each of these outstanding atheletes were in the top 24 in the province in his or her event. Jay Morril captured 4th place finish in the Midget Boys 3000m while Danielle O'Neil was a very close 5th in the Midget girls Long Jump. Derrick Wyant was 1st in Midget Boys Discus and Jen VanderVecht was 16th in the Junior Girls 80m Hurdles. Last but not least, the Midget Girls relay of Meg Plyley , Sasha Helmkay , Caissa Gamble and Danielle O' Neil placed 15th in the province. This team impressed their competition but also made an impression on the school record books. Overall, Six school records were replaced by this year's achievements and some of the records were broken repeatedly as these fine athletes honed their skills during the season.
