       TENNIS
It was a great year for the CCI Junior Tennis Team. We won the North regional tournament on May 19th and followed it up by capturing the GBSSA Championship on May 31st In the GBSSA Tournament: Carley Wood and Mika Halos both won a match in Girls Singles before being
eliminated. Steve Helm and Christian Lapierre took fourth in Boys Doubles. Jeff Watt and Kendra Machin came in third in Mixed Doubles and their teammates Derrick Wood and Alexis Woods overcame a rain delay and a move to the Monterra Tennis Dome to win the Mixed Doubles
Championship 8-2 in a well played final against Bradford . And in Girls Doubles Beth Noordegraaf and Kristin Elton won four straight matches, the final being a
pivotal match in which they defeated Jean Vanier to win the GB title. The CCI team regained the overall team championship over the 16 qualifying teams by earning 11 team points from their two individual firsts, a third and a fourth place finish. The CCI team has now won this championship 16 out of the last 17 years. The Collingwood Fighting Owls Croos Country runners showed that their place at the top of the Cross-Country Running field is well deserved as they put forth great effort and delivered some incredible results in 2006. An impressive crew of nearly 60 runners braved some of the nastiest conditions in recent years and managed to rise above all the rain, mud and even snow to deliver a championship season that every member of the team had a hand (or a foot) in crafting.
In Simcoe County League competition, the Owls won all four of the season meets en route to capturing the overall team title for Simcoe County. This means that the Golden Boot, recognizing the top local cross-conntry running school, will remain in The Wood for a 5th straight year. Most impressive is that all six Collingwood C.I. teams contributed to the overall total with all three Girls teams placing Ist in their respective standings while on the guys side the Seniors were 3rd, the Juniors 4th and the Midgets 6th At the GBSSA Championships, the Owls looked to defend their overall victory from 2005 which had been the first ever in school history. On the grinding hills of Duntroons Highlands Nordic trails, C.C.I. soared once again
as they managed to capture the Girls Overall and the Overall Combined Championships. All five of Collingwoods teams that were entered contributed to the overall team total. At OFSAA, the Owls were represented by both the Senior Gi.rls and Senior Boys teams. The long 18 hour trek to Thunder Bay was a fitting adventure to cap off the long and successful season. The teams placed in the top 30 in Ontario showing that the Owls are definitely deserving of their place amongst the best runners in Ontario.
