MICHAEL BROWN White police officer Darren Wilson shot and killed African American teen Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, eliciting violent protests across the U.S. after a jury decided not
to indict Wilson. Protests continued after similar violent incidents happened in New York.
Parlian~enf Sboofing Gunman Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, a suspected Islam convert, shot soldier Nathan Cirillo as he guarded Ottawa's National War Memorial in October. The gunman then made his way to the Centre Block building on Parliament Hill where he opened fire inside the lobby just minutes later. Kevin Vickers, former sergeant-at-arms of The House of Commons, was deemed a hero for ending the violent attacks and killing Zehaf-Bebeau. Offices and surrounding buildings remained on lockdown for hours afterward as police searched for additional suspects in the brutal attack. They later determined that the gunman had acted alone. Canada didn't rule out that the incident was
an act of terror; in fact, officials had just raised the terror threat level the Friday before due to a terror-like hit-and-run of two soldiers. This shooting was said to be the most serious security breach since the Parliament bombing in 1966. The investigation into the shooting and the gunman was ongoing. Vickers, 58, served with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for 29 years, and was named Canada's Ambassador to Ireland effective January 19, 2015.
