THE GLEANER
fully half the game was gone before our girls settled down t() play steady ball. The saddest part, however, was the score, for it must be admitted that we were overwhelmed by their forty- runs to our twelve. The figures do not really indicate the brand of ball that was played, for the members of the team gave theil' best and their knowledge of baseball is not small. To quote from the Owen Sound Sun-Times: "It was the first time the visitors had played indoors and they were rather at a loss."
Owing to the extreme bad temper of the weather man, no return games were played, and no opportunity presented itself for us to bring in any Owen Sound or Barrie scalps.
The team:
Catcher and Captain-Catherine MacArthur. Pitcher-Dorothy Welsh.
1st Base--Agnes Vickers.
2nd Base-Mary Welsh and Vera Leinster. 3rd Base--Dorothy Mickler.
Short Stop-Iona Piercy.
Left Field-Kathryn Bell.
Centre Field-Jean Fulford and Margery Moore. Right Field-Gertrude O'Malley.
BASKETBALL
Basketball has almost become a forgotten art! In years past the girls of th\; C. C. I. were renowned for their basketball team, but for the two years when we were without a gymnasium, there was no team to go out and win laurels for the school. Now, how- ever, in our new gym, the girls are taking a lively interest in this sport, and from present indications next year will again see a team that will be as great or even greater than the teams of former years. Inter-form games are played and the girls are regaining their prowess in this splendid sport.
HOCKEY
In addition to baseball and basketball our girls are playing hockey now. A Le~gue has been formed in the school, and the girls get on their skates and heroically stand the bumps and bruises of this noble sport. The captains of the various teams are Vera Leinster, Wilda McCorki:ndale and Ruth MacMurchy.
A snappy brand of hockey is certainly displayed when two of these teams meet, and undoubtedly in the near future they will compete with school teams from neighboring towns.
