OUR PRINCIP AL
COLOUR ME ROSE
Memory says colour me rose. And why should it be otherwise. This issue of our Gleaner focuses on our Centennial celebration. We look back over one hundred years to see the past softened by time and caressed by imagination. Events, even those that may have been harsh when they happened, are seen through the rose-coloured glasses of the perspective of time.
We can be very proud of our past. Our history in its earliest beginnings goes back beyond the 100 year mark to the first grammar school that was established in 1857. In 1973-74 we cele- brate our one hundredth year as a high school. It is interesting to note that under our first high
school principal, William Williams, our school had more graduates in a given year (1877) who passed the standard provin- cial examinations than such places as Ottawa, Barrie, Hamilton and Kitchener. Based on these provincial results Mr. Williams boasted, and rightly so, that we were the best high school in Ontario. Our past tells us BE PROUD.
We look back in pride. It is too bad that the past graduates of whom we are so proud could not look forward to see what Collingwood Collegiate Institute is like today. If they could see this Gleaner they would be proud of what their school became.
On behalf of all who enjoy the very fine memory pages of this book, I extend thanks and appreciation to our editor, Sharon Reid and her capable staff, and also to the teaching staff who acted as advisors.
A great school deserves a great Gleaner.
William J. Giller, Principal.
