       Amnesty International .
"For years I was held in a tiny cell. My only human contact was w1th my torturers. For two and a half of those years I did not experience the glance of a human face, see a green leaf. My only company was the
cockroaches and the mice. . On Christmas Eve the door to my cell opened and the guard tossed 1n a crumpled piece of paper. It said simply, 'Costantino, do not be discouraged; we know you are alive.' Those words saved my l1fe and my
sanity. Eight months later, I was set free." . a released prisoner of conscience
in Paraguay
It was because of receiving messages like this that the members of
CCI's Amnesty International Youth Group worked diligently on behalf of human rights throughout the school year. Every week.AI members would write letters to author1t1es around the world ask1ng for JUStice for prisoners of conscience. .
Amnesty International ia a worldwide human rights movement wh1ch works impartially for the release of prisoners of conscience: men, women and children detained anywhere for the1r bel1efs, colour, ethn1c or~gm, sex, religion or language provided they have neither used nor advocated violence. . .
But the CCI Amnesty Group were much more active than wr1t1ng let- ters. The Group undertook a campaign to make the school commun1ty aware of human rights issues. Included in the campaign were:
• an "Abolish the Death Penalty Worldwide" display
• the making of a television program with Maclean-Hunter
• participation at an AI rally m Toronto
• being an effective part of the Rememberance Day Assembly • a Human Rights Week display
• an International Woman's Day action
Members of the group were : BK. ROW: Janna Erichsen-Brown , Christina Rawn Lisa Simmonds, Mandy Holroyd, Michael Doupe, Anthony Pratt, Cheryl Mclean, Candi Spitzig, Mr. Wilkinson. FR. ROW: Mrs. Grant, visiting guest, Michelle Doupe, Wendy Graham.

Curling
This year was one of the most active years in curling at
C.C.I. The school was represented by two boy's teams and a girls team. . .
The girls team d1d very well for a f1rst year team. The team was represented by Kathy-Jo Quesnel, Marsha Green, Michelin Quesnel and Tina Hawton. The girls team travelled to Penetang for the Simcoe County play-offs. They d1d very well in that they qualified for G.B.'s and tried for f1rst place. However, they were defeated by Barrie Central in a very close game at Barrie . The team then proceded to Huntsville for the Georgian Bay play-offs. For a new team they d1d very well winning their first game agamst Elmvale but they lost their next two games to Parry Sound and Le Caron. The coach would also like to thank Alana Tennant and Cheryl Mclean for helping out when the team was short of players.
The boys curling team had a good year in that they found themselves playing in some very close games bemg dec1ded by skips rocks or an extra end. The f1rst compet1t1on was the Gore Mutual. The boys team consisted of John Millsap, Brad Baumgarten, Brooke Timmons, Aaron Harnden and Don Bowden . They did not wm the playdown at Collmgwood, but they gained valuable experience for the G.B.'s.
At the G.B.'s, C.C.I. was able to enter two teams, the Senior team and an alternate team made up of Brad Dey, Shawn Brock Jerry Payne and Donald Bowden. Both teams did not mak~ it out of the competition, but the coach was very proud of both teams in that they lost in very close games to be eliminated from further compet1t1on.
Mr. Cook is very proud of the members of all teams because of the sportsmanship and fine curling that everyone displayed on the ice and on the road. .
Another activity in curling that was very act1ve th1s year was the curling elective. It involved close to 50 students along with organizers Mr. Redmond, Mr. Cook and Mr. and Mrs. Wilkinson. The students had a great t1me curl1ng and a lot of fun fighting for their favourite doughnuts.
