In the Swim
This year both CCI and the town of Collingwood faced a controversy - that being, should the town have a competition-size swimming pool? The town felt that the School Board should pay for it and the School Board felt the town should pay for it. Numerous public meetings were held and planning engineers were called in but they still couldn't come to a conclusion. But we at CCI went to the real ex- perts, the students of Collingwood Collegiate. After all, those hours you spent in Mr. Hunwicks' urban geography class finally payed off!!!
The obvious question was do we need a swimming pool? The general concensus was we do. Here are some of the comments made: "Yes, swimming is a valuable skill and a great way to exercise. Also if in- corporated into the Phys. Ed program, life-saving skills could also be taught.", Tara Gignac. On the other side of the ball Rob Blakeman stated , " Yes I do think it is a good idea. If we got a swimming pool we could have excellent pool parties." Even though the majority of the students asked were in favour of the pool there were still people who disagreed, "There is a public swimming pool at the YMCA why would we need two? Why not use the money for something more useful" was Shannon Martin's point of view.
Even if the pool was approved, where would we put it? What seemed to be the most popular choice of the students asked was "THE COURT YARD" even though Mr. Rhodes, who is one of the voices on this topic, felt that it should go on the other side of the track from the football field on the Hurontario St. side.
Now you know what happened and what some of the other people in the school had to say, what do you think? Where do you think it should go? Either way don't get your hopes up because nothing is for sure.
