In September, 70 eager, hopeful players turned out for the first day of the Junior Fighting Owl's 1990 sea- son. Three days later after trying to run them into the ground, the coaches still counted 60 live bodies. Eventually uniforms were found for 50 players - our biggest numbers ever.
We had numbers and enthusiasm, but only 5 ex- perienced returners from the previous year's starting team. How well we would do, depended upon how fast the players improved.
Leadership surfaced early. Several players demon- strated the skill and desire needed to be a cham- pionship team and that's where we ended up- in the championship.
We had some ups and downs during the season, as players learned to play consistently with their emo- tions channelled into intensive play - not into temp- ers and penalties, but we were up more than down and finished the schedule in fourth place with a 4-2-1 record. We were awarded the Len Roque Trophy for winning the local Stayner-Collingwood game.
The greatest highlight was our semi-final victory over first place lnnisdale. Strong, disciplined defence and inspired offence allowed the underdogs to triumph. Everyone expected lnnisdale to win, but the day be- longed to the Owls.
We then met Bradford in the G.B.S.S.A. Champion- ship game. This marked the fifth appearance in the last 6 years for the C.C.I. Juniors, but the champion- ship trophy was not ours to bring home as Bradford won the contest.
Nevertheless being champions is not simply due to the score and Coaches Simpson, Rhodes and Ed- wards felt they had a championship team in 1990.
