Following the retirement of Mr. L. Smith as Chief Instructor, Mr. A.B. Willis has become the new Instructor of the Corps. Training methods as established by Mr. Smith are being carried on as in the past, and it is expected that the Corps will demonstrate in the Annual Inspection the same spirit, smartness, and efficiency displayed last year.
As a result of two visits to Camp Borden, there has been an improvement in the hand- ling of the service rifle and in the quality of marksmanship.
Under the direction of Staff-Sergeant Smith, certain cadets have made noteworthy progress in signals training. Cadets Parker, Twigg, and Tweddle received their standard certificates; Cadet Twigger received his advanced certificate; and Cadets Graham and Towns were granted both standard and ad- vanced certificates, along with twenty dollars each in cash awards.
Cadet officers and junior instructors of the Corps are the following: W. Soucie, C.O.; M. McSorley, 2 ijc; D. Montgomery, Q.M.; J. Badowski, Trp. Off.; A. Stout, Band; W. Twigger, Ranges; D. WilsonandM. McSorley, Trg.; R. Smith, Sigs.
The present C.I. would like to express to the Board, the sponsors of the Corps,
BACK ROW: Steve Twigg, Jim McCauley, Dave Hockley, Robert McCarl, Mac Edwards. MIDDLE ROW: Jack Bailey, Joe Matanowitsch, Robert Barber, BobCollins,RobertPhillips,PatMcSorley,
to the cadet Officers and N.C.O. 's, and especially to Capt. L.R. Smith whose energy and leadership sustained and inspired th~ Corps in recent years, his appreciation of the support, time, and talents so freely and cheerfully given.
Despite all this and the fine record of achievement of the Corps, the year 1964 will probably witness the demise of Cadet Corps # 51 of the Collingwood Collegiate. A tradition which extends back to the days of the First World War is likely to be abandoned. This development is the direct result of student indifference; the instructors have concluded that to continue to labour in the face of a lack of interest on the part of a majority of the male students of the school is futile and frustrating. That the forces of selfishness, apathy, and material pleasure have triumphed over the ideals of serviee, duty, and discipline will sadden and anger those students who value the Corps, and even more will sadden and anger those former students who received their ·first taste of military training in the C.C.I. Cadet Corps, and who honour the memory of friends and comrades who "shall not grow old."
A.B. Willis, Chief Instructor
